My husband announced our divorce in front of the guests. My mother-in-law burst out laughing. But no one was prepared for what my father had left behind…
I took a step forward and carefully placed my coffee mug on the table. A silence so deep fell over the living room that you could hear the wall clock ticking every second.
—”Alex,” I said calmly, “since you decided to announce the divorce in front of everyone, I think I should say something too.”
He let out a short, contemptuous laugh.
—”Now what? Are you going to throw a scene?”
Some of the guests laughed nervously. His mother, Mrs. Harrison, settled into the sofa with a smirk of satisfaction.
—”Go ahead, speak,” she said mockingly. “Let’s see what you’ve got for us.”
I pulled my phone from my pocket and looked at the screen for a moment.
—”Two days ago, my father’s attorney visited me.”
Alex shrugged his shoulders.
—”So what? You think some papers scare us?”
—”No,” I replied quietly. “I just want to explain to you what has already happened.”
The room went silent again. Tiffany stopped smiling. A couple of guests glanced at each other.
—”My father was a very cautious man,” I continued. “He knew that one day, people might appear who would try to take advantage of my trust.”
Alex rolled his eyes.
—”Enough with the drama.”
—”That’s why he made two wills.”
Mrs. Harrison frowned.
—”Two?”
—”You already know the first one,” I said. “The one where everything passed to my name.”
Alex raised an eyebrow.
—”And?”
I looked him directly in the eyes.
—”The second one goes into effect only in two cases.”
The silence became even heavier.
—”If my husband requests a divorce on his own initiative… or if it is proven that he has squandered the family assets.”
Alex let out a roar of laughter.
—”And that’s supposed to scare me?”
—”No,” I replied. “It just means things have already changed.”
Mrs. Harrison sat up straight.
—”What are you talking about?”
I breathed calmly.
—”The moment you said in front of everyone that you wanted a divorce… that second will automatically went into effect.”
For a few seconds, no one said a word. Alex narrowed his eyes.
—”And?”
—”And that means the house, the Manhattan condo, the company, and all the bank accounts… are no longer in my name.”
Mrs. Harrison smiled maliciously.
—”So in the end, you’re left with nothing.”
I shook my head.
—”No.”
I looked at Alex with serenity.
—”Everything was transferred into my son Danny’s name.”
Someone dropped their glass, and the sound of shattering crystal echoed on the floor. Alex turned pale.
—”That’s a joke.”
—”No,” I said softly. “It’s the law.”
He took a step toward me.
—”You’re lying.”
—”The attorney came to my home personally,” I replied. “And this morning, all the documents were officially registered.”
His expression began to tighten.
—”You wouldn’t have done something like that.”
—”I didn’t do it,” I said. “My father did it five years ago.”
Mrs. Harrison looked confused.
—”That’s impossible! Alex practically ran the company!”
—”Alex only thought he ran it,” I replied.
Some guests began to whisper among themselves. Alex swallowed hard.
—”This isn’t staying like this.”
—”Maybe,” I said calmly. “But today is not your day.”
I took my coat from the rack.
—”By the way… the attorney also initiated a financial audit of the company.”
Alex stood motionless.
—”What audit?”
—”One that is going to show exactly where the funds that disappeared from the accounts ended up.”
The silence became heavy. Tiffany looked at her phone as if it were suddenly the most interesting thing in the world.
—”You have no proof,” Alex said, but his voice no longer sounded certain.
—”Yes, I do,” I replied. “Transfers, signatures, bank records.”
Mrs. Harrison looked at her son.
—”Alex…?”
He didn’t answer. His hands were tense.
—”My father always said something,” I added quietly.
Alex observed me in silence.
—”The most dangerous people are those who believe they are smarter than everyone else.”
No one laughed again. Some guests began to gather their things slowly. One of them was already walking toward the door. Alex tried to regain his tone of confidence.
—”You think you can destroy me?”
—”No,” I said.
I opened the door.
—”You did that all by yourself.”
Mrs. Harrison looked at me incredulously.
—”You planned all of this.”
I smiled slightly.
—”No. I just stopped stopping you.”
The fresh night air of Miami entered the house. Behind me, I could hear murmurs, footsteps, and the rustle of jackets. Alex said in a low voice:
—”You’re going to be left all alone.”
I turned one last time.
—”No.”
I pulled out my phone. On the screen was a new message from my friend at the ranch. A photo of Danny. He was covered in mud up to his knees, smiling widely and hugging a puppy. Below the photo, it said:
“Everything is great over here.”
I looked at the image for a few seconds. Then I put the phone in my pocket and stepped out into the night. Because for the first time in many years, I felt that, finally, I was free.
